wol op het Zuidereiland - Wool on the South Island

Whenever I travel I use Ravelry to find yarn stores. Just go to yarns and then Local Yarn Shop Directory and enter your city. I found stores in different cities. Each one had slightly different selections.

In Hokitika I visited Sock World. They specialise in merino yarns as well as possum merino blend. You can also buy machine knit socks. Those socks are usually knit at a tighter gauge then handknit socks. My IronMan complaines of 'feeling the bumps' in handknit socks, so I hoped to persuade him to try out some woollen socks, but the colors were a bit too wild to his taste. So I left with one hank of felted merino and possum blend, maybe to knit a cowl?

Sockworld is a Yarn Store, a sock producer and retailer, as well  a Museum of vintage Sock machines from hand cranked to seventy year old automatic machines that they produce socks on, the house speciality is possum socks.
And you don't have to travel to Hokitika to see a sockknitting machine operating. August 9th in Vlassenbroek, Belgium you can attend the sockknitting machine gathering.

Lots of knitted poppies, to remember the soldiers who died in the first World War. About 10 percent of the young men of New-Zealand has died then. It was strange to see several Belgian villages mentioned in musea and on monuments.

Nelson has Cruellas which stocks their own blended and dyed yarn as well as Zealana and other NZ made yarns. They have some wonderful possum mixes. I left with 3 balls of Zealana air, a luxuary blend of possum, cachmere and silk.

Also in Nelson is Fibre Spectrum. This is not really a yarnstore, more a local collective of (fiber) artists, who sell their artwork and creations. I was tempted to buy felted earhangers or a brooche, but eventually I bought two hanks of handspun white Romney. They did not allow pictures, fear of copycats? But they did not oppose to one quick picture of the shelves of handspun. For all the other stuff, you'll have to consult the website.

Next blogpost I will post some more about yarn on the North Island...
